Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation Surgery:
This type of surgery is done in order to change the size and shape of the breast. The number of placement methods a surgeon may use for this procedure are varied, and the procedure may be done with silicone or saline implants.
Length of the procedure is typically 1 hour.
Most patients are released from the hospital within 1 day of having the procedure performed.
You may usually return home three days after having a breast augmentation procedure.
Although you will be released from care rather quickly, you will probably experience a lot of discomfort following surgery. You should plan to stay in a hotel for a few days, even after you are cleared to travel, so that you can recuperate, heal a bit more, and feel less discomfort when you travel.
Details of the Procedure:
Surgery begins with the administration of general anesthesia, and the surgeon will make the incision for the implant once you are fully under the effects of the anesthesia.
Placement methods for implants:
- Most surgeons make an incision under the breast, following the natural contour of the fold, but his procedure does leave a visible scar.
- Surgeons can also make an incision under the arm, and they will insert the implant using an endoscope. This leaves the breast area intact, and it leaves a small scar under the arm that is hardly noticeable.
- Another method used by surgeons is to make a cut around the areola in order to insert the implant, but this may interfere with sensation, and it may cause problems with breast feeding.
- There is also a technique which allows the surgeon to place the implant through an incision near your belly button using an endoscope. The advantage to this technique is that the scar usually blends in with the belly button.
The breast implant is generally placed under or over the muscle, depending on what the doctor feels will look best for a particular patient.
Following the Procedure:
You will be taken to recovery once the procedure is complete, and you will be under careful monitoring. Once you awake from your surgery and your vitals are stable, you will go to a regular hospital room , or you will be released from the hospital.
You will have a tightly wrapped bandage or dressing around your breasts and chest following your surgery. A surgical bra may also be required after surgery. Surgical drains may be placed in some women’s breasts, but these drains are usually removed within 3 days following the procedure.
Breast augmentation self-care:
- After surgery, wait 1 or 2 days to resume light activity.
- After one or two weeks, return to work.
- For the first 3 to 6 weeks, avoid heavy lifting.
- For the first 3 to 6 weeks, avoid exercise or any other strenuous activity.
- Do not stretch your arms out during the first 3 to 6 weeks.
- Do not drive during the first 2 weeks.
