Type 2 Diabetes
Metabolic Surgery is not Designed for Weight Loss:
Although metabolic surgery is not specifically designed for weight loss, the discovery that it resolves type 2 diabetes came as a direct result of weight loss or bariatric surgery!
Resolve Type 2 Diabetes:
This chronic disease causes people of different ages to suffer and reduces years in a person’s quality of life. In fact, Type-2 diabetes has become a world-wide epidemic, with millions of people being diagnosed each year around the world, and 220 million people already suffering from its effects.
There have been numerous technological advances in medicine, but there hasn’t been a satisfactory treatment found that can revert the disease and prevent complications caused by Type II diabetes from developing. In addition, this is a life-long disease which continues to damage organs and systems in spite of treatment, and it can go so far as to lead to the sufferer’s premature death.
The discovery:
Weight-loss surgery (especially laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery) is what led to the discovery that Type II diabetes patients began recovering from the disease to the point where they were no longer insulin dependent. Therefore, clinical studies were begun on this peculiarity, with the ensuing discovery that substances called antiincreatins were being produced when food passes through the first part of the small intestine, and it is these substances that inhibit insulin production and create resistance.
The clinical trials further showed that there is a rise in substances called increatins which produce insulin and decrease resistance when food passes through the end of the small intestine. Therefore, by means of metabolic surgery, Type-2 diabetes and its effects can be reverted, complications from the disease can be avoided, and the patient’s life expectancy will increase.
The results:
This is not a new surgery, and it was actually used many years ago to treat gastric ulcers. However, there have been modifications to the technique so that patients will neither lose weight nor suffer any changes in their digestive process.
This procedure is being done for more than five years in countries like Costa Rica, and it has proven itself to be 90% effective in reverting diabetes. In fact, where Central America is concerned, Costa Rica is a pioneer in this technique, with wonderful results.
